History of Mount Rubidoux
Mount Rubidoux has a long and rich history dating back centuries. The Tongva people, who are the original inhabitants of the Los Angeles Basin, considered the mount to be sacred ground. They believed that the mountain was home to powerful spirits and used it for religious ceremonies. The mountain got its name from Louis Rubin, who was one of Riverside’s first settlers. Rubin built a house on the mount in 1859 and used it as a ranch where he grew grapes and other fruits and vegetables.


In 1911, local businessman Frank Miller purchased the mount with the intention of developing it into a park. He donated the land to the city of Riverside with the stipulation that it always remain open and free to the public. The city has upholded Miller’s wishes and today, Mount Rubidoux is one of Riverside’s most beloved parks. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the mount to enjoy its scenic views and hiking trails.
